Motifs as mediators of the everyday

"

Through my artistic practice, I navigate a dynamic interplay between memory, craft, and culture, capturing the essence of Indian life in a way that is at once critical and celebratory. Regular visits to bustling local markets and traditional craft villages across India became a reservoir of inspiration, where I observed artisans dedicated to their craft. These encounters were an invitation to immerse myself in the narrative, representational, and symbolic nature of Indian visual culture, an inherent storytelling quality that continues to influence my work. As an Indian artist living within an urban milieu yet anchored in traditions, I find my practice shaped by the vernacular arts seamlessly embedded in our metropolitan lifestyle. My works function as a satirical lens, deconstructing and reinterpreting the subconscious moments, rituals, and idiosyncrasies of Indian culture. They engage with the decorative and ornamental motifs that define the kitschy aesthetic of Indian living, drawing equally from historical and contemporary cultural environments. The resulting imagery navigates the tensions between the local and the global, the traditional and the contemporary. Symbols and motifs emerge as mediators, balancing this duality while confronting viewers with a deliberate sense of discomfort, cloaked in intricate decoration. My process aims to challenge how we see and engage with the everyday, provoking a deeper reflection on the visual language that connects personal memory with collective cultural identity.
