Artist Statement
Sumeshan's works opens new possibilities of visual language in the contemporary art. These works prompt us for (self) introspection and push us to see the rational. His visuals are invitations to hold hands with them to the land, to the body and the soul of the artist and the community. Using the fundamental genres/tools in painting, like landscapes, portraits, still life and composition, he points at the hegemonical practices (like the Man with Book), bargain on the knowledge production process, and tries to mirror the dichotomy of self and non self. The works walk us through the history of Brahmanical society we live and critique the agents of these practices. The show provides enough light to the questions like 'How did people who opposed the caste system and the people who were never part of the varna system became the marginalized?', 'Is the contemporary art network accommodative or capable enough to receive these visuals?' This isn't a story. We keep looking at ti even without an effort but hardly see .it But the beauty and mystery of history again is the life of these visuals.
