Mahakala is a significant male protector deity of Tantric Buddhism. Mahakala is derived from two sanskrit words, "Maha" means "great" and "Kala" means "Time of Death". They are often depicted in dark skin, fierce expression symbolizing the destruction of obstacles and other evil forces. The image is made from a very old Thanka painting present inside the Ldad monastery of Kharnak. The nomads from the village believe it to be the protector of their livestock.
