Gurdeep Brar

How can art contribute to our perception of nature in its complexity? Born in Bathinda, Punjab, I am deeply engaged with ephemeral materials. My works are in response to the mismanagement of resources, the fragile relationship between man and nature, the misplacement of our priorities, sustainability, exploring cycles of growth, decline and return.

The themes of death, loss, the afterlife, and regeneration are significant in my practice. These concerns are brought together in sculptural works, site-specific installations, paintings, and photographs. To highlight their physical qualities, I have been experimenting with different materials (local clay, plaster, wax, cow dung, wood, sunflowers, and other organic remnants). Embracing the transient nature of existence, works and materials are touched by time, showing signs of decay.

I completed my MFA from Shiv Nadar IOE (2023). Through this practice, I ask how art helps us rethink our priorities around sustainability and our responsibilities to the world.
