“References from my backyard”
My practice is rooted in the landscapes closest to me - backyards, wetlands, small canals, the overlooked corners of everyday life in Kochi. I'm less interested in grand vistas and more in what these quiet spaces carry: memory, history, the residue of power. My work pulls from colonial-era photographs, popular magazines, kitsch imagery, and vernacular painting traditions. Figures from my immediate surroundings sometimes appear in colonial costumes - a sepoy, a British officer - caught in ordinary acts like fishing, walking, gardening. That friction between the mundane gesture and the historically loaded attire is where the work lives - quietly unsettling what we think we know about place, representation, and who gets to tell the story.
