In the Midst of Immense Streams of Defeat In the Midst of Immense Streams of Defeat unfolds as a constellation of inner and outer crises—personal despair entangled with collective suffering. Each fragment-like panel becomes a shard of a larger world, where myth, memory, and political reality converge. The work emerges from reflections on the farmers’ struggles in India—moments when hunger pushed them to desperate extremes, when dignity was reduced to survival, and political decisions turned into instruments of suffering. Within these scenes, personal anxieties and philosophical tensions intertwine, forming a complex psychological landscape. A figure juggling skulls becomes a metaphor for the political class, carelessly balancing the lives and deaths of ordinary people. Another character regurgitates fragments of ideology—Leninist thoughts that, despite their theoretical weight, fail to address the raw urgency of hunger. The futility of intellectual frameworks in the face of lived suffering becomes painfully visible. Sisyphus’s stone appears as a cosmic burden resting on a human head—a universe of tension carried silently within the mind. The Greek goddess Demeter, symbol of harvest and sustenance, lies as a severed head upon a farmer’s umbrella: a haunting emblem of a world where the protectors of fertility have been silenced, and the cycle of nourishment is broken. Elsewhere, the elderly release long-held desires, Snail and birds merge in acts of fragile hope, and the boundaries between myth and reality dissolve into watery, smoke-filled spaces. Each vignette captures a moment of surrender, resilience, or bewilderment—small gestures within a vast narrative of defeat. Together, these images map the emotional geography of a time when the weight of politics pressed deeply on both body and spirit. The painting becomes a meditation on despair, but also on the quiet endurance that persists even when entire universes seem to collapse upon the human head.
