Inspired by Sukanta Bhattacharya’s poem _“Chharpatra,”_ this painting reflects the broken promise of a peaceful world once dreamt for future generations. In a time when genocide and violence have become normalized, the father’s gift to his child is no longer hope, but smoke — a symbol of inherited despair. The child, born into a wounded world, stands handicapped not only in body but in spirit, bearing the weight of humanity’s failures. The mountains, embedded with watchful eyes, become metaphors for nature’s silent witness — observing our destruction and waiting for its own retribution. The fiery sky, embroidered with the poet’s words, evokes both pain and resistance, each stitch a wound and a prayer. The border, inspired by the intricate designs of India’s constitutional patterns and crafted by women, honors their quiet endurance and strength. Through this work, the artist mourns the loss of innocence and questions what kind of legacy we are leaving behind — when the very act of breathing becomes an inheritance of smoke.
